Mkhunyane has a typical KwaZulu-Natal topography with 5 different habitat types in one reserve. The climate is mild, and temperatures from March to October are pleasant.
The different habitat types are: High grasslands, riverine, tropical forest patches, lowveld and wetland patches. These diverse habitats harbour a multitude of diverse bird species, 235 different species have been recorded thus far.
