Serval Civet

During the middle of September we hosted 3 new hunters from Germany in our Karoo area. One of the hunters, Gustav, was the chief taxidermist for the Vienna Museum of Natural History up to his retirement some years ago. I also subsequently found out that I met him 31 years ago when I accompanied Dr Herbert Schifter (the Ornithologist from the Vienna Museum) on a bird collecting trip through South Africa. I was then working for the Ornithology Dept. of the Museum of Natural History in Bloemfontein South Africa. Gustav prepared the birds while I collected the specimens all those years ago! We had a lot to talk about. Gustav took a very impressive Scimitar-horned Oryx bull and some Springbuck.

His companion and the organizer of the hunt, Jürgen, took Blue Wildebeest, Black Wildebeest, Cape Eland, Kudu, Waterbuck, Warthog and Mountain Reedbuck. He is an extremely good hunter and despite some problems with his health walked very long distances to secure his trophies. My hat off to him! Peter took Blesbuck, 2 Blue Wildebeest, Oryx, Red Hartebeest and 2 Warthog and a Springbuck..
